HW GUIDE:  NEWPORT FOLK FESTival

A summer tradition for the Rochussells - it's one of the best weekends of the summer.  If you're curious on how to best do the fest - we got you covered.

details

Location:  Newport, RI (3hr drive from NYC, 1.5hr drive from Boston)

Date: 3rd weekend in July

Reason:  It's the best music festival.  Period.  The people, the music, the history, the vibe - it can't be beat.  Recently named "Festival of the Year" by HW favorite Consequence of Sound it's easy to see why tickets sell out within 24hrs of going on sale without even a hint of who will fill the lineup.  Trust me - it's a winner.

How to swing it

If you've never been, we recommend the "full-pull" - go all three days.  It's nice to be there on Friday when it's slightly less crowded and when walking in the gates on Saturday you feel like a vet.

Lodging: Newport is pricy this weekend, so we recommend getting an AirBnB with pals or grabbing a spot in nearby Middleton.  Otherwise get ready for $500+ a night rooms (no bueno unless you get to keep the robes).

In / Out of the Festival: The age old question - how to do you get in and out of the festival?  Since it takes place in Fort Adams State Park, which is perched on the point it ain't easy getting in by car - that's why the festival offers ferries from the main area of town to the fort.  We recommend riding bikes.  You get to park it for free at the gates (closer then any other means of transportation) and the ride to any point in town is ~30min through beautiful seaside neighborhoods.

highlights

Too many to write here but from a musical perspective My Morning Jacket backing Roger Waters, Beck on the final day headliner playing as sun broke through the clouds, Father John Misty making friends, surprise appearance by James Taylor, Blake Mills coming alive with Dylan's guitar, Jenny Lewis' rainbow explosion, etc. etc. etc. I could go on.

Just go - we'll see you there.  It's the best.
